Bristol's Urban Foxes
‘Bristol’s Urban Foxes’ was my first university project venturing into the world of wildlife filmmaking independently. I chose foxes for my project because I believe that they are one of the best and most misunderstood mammals left in England.
The film captures the behaviour of urban foxes and shows them as the fantastic mammals they are, rather than the urban menace that they are usually portrayed as by the media. I chose to take a modern approach to this, by creating an informal film which is intended for online use on platforms such as YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook. This casual approach included the removal of the third wall as I take the viewer on a journey to find and film the foxes. I believe that this will help connect the audience with the experience which could aid the positive view of foxes.
Bristol Fox Watch
Filming foxes does come with some challenges, such as their night time activity. This meant that I had to put a lot of time into researching where I should look for foxes, and what equipment I should use. My research was extensive, investing considerable time into the ‘Bristol Fox Watch’ Facebook page I created to crowdsource information on sightings of foxes and their behaviour around Bristol.
My page gave me access to a wealth of information about the goings-on within the fox community as well as some very useful and knowledgeable contacts to answer any specific questions I had about fox behaviour.
